Ingredients

  • 1 pound mostaccioli pasta or penne
  • 1 pound Italian sausage casings removed
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
  • ½ teaspoon red pepper flakes optional
  • 3 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 marinara sauce 24 ounce jar
  • 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
  • ½ cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley optional

Method

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F. Lightly grease a 9x13 baking dish.
  2. Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Cook the pasta according to package directions until just al dente. Drain and set aside.
  3. Heat a large skillet over medium heat. Add the Italian sausage and cook, breaking it apart with a spoon, until browned and fully cooked.
  4. Season with salt, pepper, Italian seasoning, and red pepper flakes, if using. Add minced garlic and cook for about 30 seconds, until fragrant.
  5. Stir in the marinara sauce and cooked pasta until evenly coated.
  6. Spread half of the pasta mixture into the prepared baking dish. Sprinkle with 1 cup mozzarella and half of the Parmesan cheese.
  7. Add the remaining pasta mixture and top with the remaining mozzarella and Parmesan.
  8. Bake uncovered for 25 to 30 minutes until the cheese is melted, bubbly, and lightly golden.
  9. Let rest for 10 minutes before serving. Sprinkle with fresh parsley if desired.
