What Ingredients do you need to make Tater Tot Casserole?

Ingredients.

Ingredients

Frozen Tater Tots – These are the perfect topper for this casserole, crunchy but soft in the middle.

Ground beef – I like to use lean ground beef, which is close to an 80/20 protein-to-fat ratio.

Garlic powder – Because everything tastes better with a little garlic in it.

Onion powder – Adds great flavor, and you don’t have to cry when you are chopping onions!

Cream of mushroom and cream of celery soup – Adding these cans of soup is a great way to add flavor with little effort.

Worcestershire sauce – Adds umami flavor to any recipe.

Frozen green beans – Another easy shortcut that helps add vegetables to the casserole.

Mozzarella cheese – Make sure you grate your own cheese; the pre-grated stuff contains anti-caking agents that affect the taste and texture.

How to Make a Tater Tot Casserole

Preheat oven to 425 degrees.

In a medium skillet, cook ground beef. Add 1 tsp garlic powder and 1 tsp onion powder while cooking the ground beef.

Once the ground beef is cooked, add 1 can of cream of mushroom, 1 can of cream of celery, and 1 teaspoon of Worcestershire sauce to the skillet and stir together.

Next, spoon the ground beef mixture into a 9 x 13 pan. Spread it out evenly across the pan.

Pour the bag of green beans on top of the ground beef mixture, again spreading the green beans evenly across the meat layer.

Next, spread 2 cups of shredded mozzarella cheese over the green beans. Cheesy green beans, what is not to love!!

Lastly, place the tater tots in rows on top of the mozzarella layer until the entire pan is covered.

Place the casserole (uncovered) into the oven and cook for 25 minutes, or until the tater tots are golden brown and you can see the cheese melting below (you can see small peaks of the cheese in between the tater tots).

Do you cover Tater Tot Casserole?

Usually, you do not cover Tater Tot Casserole while baking. Leaving it uncovered allows the tater tots to become golden brown and crispy instead of soft or soggy. For extra-crispy tots, you can broil for the last few minutes.

Cooked casserole ready to serve.

Once the casserole is done, pull it out of the oven and serve. Optional: If desired, sprinkle slices of green onion on top for garnish before serving.

Little Chef’s Secrets

Serving the casserole.
  • You don’t have to use green beans. You can use frozen mixed vegetables if you prefer.
  • You can substitute other cream soups if you like, but I have found that the mushroom and celery soups pair well with the mozzarella cheese.
  • You can prepare this casserole ahead of time. Keep it covered in the refrigerator and do not add the tater tots until right before you place it in the oven.
